San Diego-Days 2, 3, and 4

Before I blog about days 2-4 of our vacation, I need to go back to explain our mission at In-N-Out Burger on Day 1. About a month ago, Michael and I read an article in the Christian Science Monitor about Secret Menus. (Click those words to read the article.) They specifically mentioned In-N-Out Burger and some of the secret menu items you can get there. So Michael and I were excited to order off the secret menu. We both ordered fries "Animal Style". It was like a heart attack waiting to happen. Good, but overwhelming.

Day 2 started off early. I read about Bread and Cie, a bakery in the Hillcrest neighborhood, that bakes bread for 75 restaurants in San Diego. We decided to give it a try. It was a great decision. Panini Boy (Michael) ordered a Turkey Pesto Panini for breakfast. It came with a great vegetable side that had the best tasting cucumbers. They must have been California fresh. The rest of us had typical bakery items (cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, chocolate croissant, bear claw filled with toasted coconut). We purchased a fougasse for supper. It was delicious and beautiful.

Our bellies were full, so we decided to walk it off at Balboa Park. Drew put his roller blades on and the rest of us walked through the beautiful park. While there, we decided that it was a perfect day for kayaking, so we called San Diego Bike and Kayak Tours in La Jolla and scheduled a noon tour. We drove to La Jolla, pulled our suits our of our luggage, and got ready to kayak through the sea caves. Michael and I paired up, Rachel and David paired up, and Drew kayaked in a single boat. It was pretty educational and thriling. We kayaked over many leopard sharks, which would not hurt us if we would have fallen in. We went to the sea caves and were told that we could not go in because of the low tide. Normally the water would have been about 9 feet higher than it was on that particular day. We were also supposed to be able to see sea lions on our kayak tour, however they were gone. We were told by a couple of people that the sea lions are always there, so nobody knew why they weren't. We still were able to kayak over reefs, see Garibaldi (California's state fish) and learned a lot about kelp. We rode the waves in our boats too, although, it was a relatively calm day on the ocean.

Of course, this activity made us hungry, so we decided to seek a place to eat Fish Tacos. Our guide book explained that the fish taco was a must for San Diego tourists to eat. They were good, but we all agreed that we probably wouldn't crave one anytime soon. The refried beans that accompanied the tacos were fabulous!

However, our bellies were now full again, so we decided to walk it off by going to see the seals at Children's Pool Beach in La Jolla. We saw seals, sea anemones, lobster, and a variety of other things. It was a beautiful day and well worth the effort of getting there.

It was getting late and we still needed to stop to see relatives (K & D) of friends of ours from Ironwood. They had arranged for us to have tickets for the San Diego Chargers game. We drove to their beautiful home and talked with them for a couple hours over drinks. They were delightful & gracious people...just like Betsy and Steve. They gave us great tips on getting around San Diego and getting to Los Angeles. We decided it was time to head to our condo in Ramona. We arrived and pretty much unloaded the rental car and headed to bed. It was a big day.

Sunday morning we woke up, ate breakfast in the condo lounge, and headed straight to Santee, where we picked up a trolley to Qualcomm Stadium. The tickets we had were fabulous. We were in the first row in the east end zone. Unfortunately, all the scoring except for one touchdown happened in the west end zone, and none of us were sitting in our seats when that touchdown was scored. David, Michael, and Drew were up eating, drinking and enjoying the game in box seats, K & D had three extra tickets for the box seats and shared them with us. Rachel and I were standing in line getting cotton candy. We could tell from the noise that the Chargers were close to scoring, and we tried to run back to our seats, but L.T. scored before we got there. We had lots of fun. It was amazing to see the football players up close. They move with such grace and beauty.

After the game we took the trolley back to Santee, went to Target to buy some groceries, and headed back to Ramona. Day 3 was a great as Days 1 and 2.

Today, Monday, was our day of rest. The kids did homework in the morning hours. David took a walk, and I worked on organizing pictures on the computer. The kids wanted to swim, so we went to the pool closest to our complex and soon after headed to the other pool. We swam, read, ate lunch at the pool, and played basketball and tennis. We also got a little sunburned.

It was time to hike. We drove down the road to Mt. Gower Open Space Preserve. The trailhead map and warnings stated that rattlesnakes and Wildcats could be found in the area and gave instructions for what to do should we encouter them. Michael, who hates snakes, was not excited. Drew led the group up the trail. Rachel dragged behind. She had a headache and was not at all excited about walking to the top. We ended up turning back before we reached the ridge, although Rachel would like to try it again on Friday, which is our next scheduled R & R day.

And now...we are about to play the card game 3-13 and watch Monday Night Football. Tomorrow: The San Diego Zoo
